The bargain eBook
Store - turning a lemon into a lemonade
By Peter Yexley

A classic example is an eBook store; there is no doubt that
the software behind it is very sophisticated in the sense that you
buy an online store that will incorporate a search engine, probably
hundreds or thousands of eBooks, an eCommerce shopping cart that
will accept credit cards and even an automated dispatch system.
There you are sitting on the beach, sipping cocktails whilst your
website is selling and dispatching eBooks 24/7 and filling your
bank account, just a few days after buying it! It's not going to
happen!!!!
Let's break this opportunity down and look at each component.
Domain Name
Does the URL (domain name/website address) reflect the fact that
you sell eBooks? Did you buy the domain independently and ownership/billing
details are all in your name? Do you have total control of the domain
and pay the renewal directly to the ISP.
Website
Do you have the website software and a back-up copy? If the hosting
company went out of business, could you simply upload the up-to-date
software and files to a new host without too much hassle?
Hosting
When you purchased the website, were you given the option of hosting
elsewhere or were you committed to a hosting contract? Did you change
all passwords to those of your choice? If you didn't, do so now.
The main thing is to ensure you have control over the domain, website
and hosting. Look at the package as three separate units and treat
each element independently.
Assuming that you have control; let's go back to the website
again and look a little deeper.
It is likely to have a control panel but can you edit the HTML directly
if you wished? (You might not have the desire or experience but
nevertheless, do you have this level of access?
Can you add and remove eBooks? Some eBook Store websites stock them
initially with books that actually promote their own products, services
and websites. So, they are selling you an online business opportunity
with stock that markets their products/services.
Are these books full of so much filler that you are likely to be
sending refunds and gaining a bad reputation for selling self-promotion
junk as opposed to good quality eBooks.
Is there a large selection of eBooks covering various genres? A
tell-tale sign is just 'get rich quick' eBooks and nothing else.
At this point we look at 'turning a lemon into a lemonade' because
if you have a good domain, reliable hosting and a website that you
have access and control - think of it like having high street smart
premises but no stock.
You have two options now. Write your own eBooks ....a different
article altogether and sourcing your own choice of eBooks.
Will you sell a broad selection of eBooks, or focus on a particular
genre such as Health & Beauty, Arts & crafts, Romantic Novels,
Business etc?
Many eBooks are sold with resell rights, which mean that you have
a licence to sell the books and keep all the money. Some come with
the licence, other you buy separately. The latter may be of a better
quality and the license fee is a compensation payment because you
will be making money from their book. The ones that include the
reseller licence may just like the self promotion ones that you
have already.
You will begin to find that you can buy eBooks for a penny, sometimes
ten a penny! - beware of rubbish!
